Continuing our series of reviews for Xanathar's Guide to Everything, I cover the new spells introduced in the supplement. Oh my, do I love getting additions to the Dungeons & Dragons compendium, especially when they can expand how I can play the game. This month, Wizards of the Coast added a brand new rulebook to the 5th Edition collection with Xanathar's Guide To Everything, first releasing the guide to hobby stores on November 10th (which included the special cover you see below that we were ever so happy to receive for review) and everywhere else on November 21st. Today we're going to pour over the resources you now have at your disposal and whether or not they truly benefit the game.
If you have the cash to spare, Xanathar's Guide to Everything will make a welcome addition to your D&D library. While it's true that some of the information contained within its pages can be found for free online, it's also just a well-made thing, and I think everyone deserves to enjoy things that are well made. The little notes from the Xanathar, getting to hold the awesome character art in your hands, the ease of having tables printed out for you rather than trying to keep them open in a separate tab somewhere…it all adds up to a positive experience for me, and I think it will for you as well.
These aren't game-changing uber items, but rather rewards for close-knit parties and springboards for dynamic storytelling. Xanathar's continues the tradition of D&D's fifth edition by giving Dungeon Masters permission — permission to be creative, permission to improvise, permission to bring surprise and joy and discovery into their games. At $29.99 on Amazon right now, it's an absolute steal.
Developers released various D&D playtests on a website for players to try out and give feedback. After about a year these tests were examined to determine what adventurers were looking for. D&D writers used this expansion to fill in any gaps the Tomb of Annihilation had. The best ideas, the ones that added to the game and resonated well with the adventurers, were drafted and went into the 200 pages of Xanathar's Guide to EVerything.
